JUST ONE DAY OF SSSSHHHH

Jeez. Thank God that's over. President Trump it is. We can either face up to it or run for our lives. Anyway, that's not the point of this blog post. But it is to do with politics, particularly political campaigns and elections and the epidemic of words, slogans, promises, pledges, truths, lies, punditry, mischief, spin, blah, blah, blah that plague us for what seems like an eternity.

In the 2016 U.S. election as with other elections in a 24/7 media world, for obvious time difference reasons, the blether went on through the night and into this morning, and will go on an on through today, tomorrow, into the Sunday papers and over the hills and, sadly, not far away enough.

But, if I was in charge, I'd make one rule and that is a complete day of media silence the day after an election result is declared. Complete and utter sssshhhh. For all that can be said has already been said. Adding more words and bleugh, laced with misery or smuggery, just liquefies my cerebral cortex. The radio phone-ins will be infested with more cobblers than usual as callers bleat and bluster to a pot-stirring presenter.  The TV panel shows will feature hallions and has-beens, with the odd actual expert thrown in, but as with the wireless whizzdumb, people will talk over each other, shout each other down, insult each other and end up saying absolutely nothing at all that is helpful.

Newspapers should send out blank copies, except for the TV listings, the cartoons and the puzzles, and social media should just shut the hell up.

Just one day. That's all I'm asking. Just one noiseless day when we can all take stock quietly, recharge our sense of humour and perspective and ready ourselves for the next chapter.
